  Are people familiar with the Don't Laugh At Me (DLAM) project founded by Peter Yarrow of  the great folk group Peter, Paul and Mary? Its now Operation  Respect.Org.
 
"Don't Laugh At Me" is a song from PP&M'sd album In These Times which came out in 2004. Its opening verse is : "Don't laugh at me, don't call me names/don't get your pleasure from my pain/In God's eyes we're all the same/some day we'll all have perfect wings/don't laugh at me." And goes on to cite examples of those who may face prejudice. A truly great song. The  album also contains a song about Matthew Shepherd "Jesus is on the Wire"( a subject also addressed by Melissa Etheridge in her song "Scarecrow.").

 Peter  Paul and Mary have been addressing issues of humanity and social justice since  they appeared with Dr. Martin Luther King at the  1963 March on Washington. The curriculum packet is a must have for educators working with issues of tolerance and justice.
 
Would like to see Aly and Aj do that song, as they addressed the issue so well in their song "Sticks and Stones."

I guess what literally breaks my heart is that this young soul was a human being, just like the rest of us. Love is taught just like hate is. We need to teach our children at an early age to love one another irregardless of others personalities, hairstyles, clothes choices or any other thing that makes us unique.  Sometimes you can see little children (preschool) holding hands with their "buddy," and they could care less who that person is. All they know is they are their friend. What is important these days? Our outward appearance?? I should hope not. What we have and can give others on the inside is what is important.  I hope that he did realize before his life was cut so very short that there are people all over the world who would have embraced him, loved him, and accepted him. My heart goes out to all those who did just that. I am sure you will have a huge void in your life. In the forum "Inspired by Larry" there is a member by the name of Joose who has taken a great deal of heat for what appears to be mean spirited comments about, let us say, the lack of intelligence around at letting Larry do the things he did.  In  fact he even mentioned that the authorities were culpable in Larry's death.  It didn't hit me until now, with you bringing up your organization that Joose had an important point to be made, which will be lost over here.

It is indeed up to the school officials and the studentbody to educate students, parents and school authorities about our needs and creating sensitivity and compassion for all people who are different or could be labeled "different."

just letting you know that this tragic story has reached Australia and driven me to starting a national group called the School Angels. It's to help tackle homophobia and bullying in schools. We are staging a concert to help raise money for the programs.

We have an adolescent suicide problem in the county I live in. And we also have a HUGE fundamentalist church that continuously pronounces homosexuals as sinners. They are compared to murderers and adulterers. I am sure there is a connection. The GreenHouse Project, a collaboration between Tumbleweed Center for Youth Development, City of Phoenix Councilman Tom Simplot, 1n10, NTOUCH and community volunteers, will provide a transitional housing program that will teach the skills necessary for independent living while affording homeless Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLBT) 18-24 years old a safe, temporary living environment. To address the needs of GLBT youth under the age of 18, the project will enlist a network of foster parents willing to house this underserved population.

Although GLBT youth make up less than ten percent of the general population, they represent 20 to 45 percent of the homeless and runaway youth on the street. The need for emergency shelters for all youth is critical, but for GLBT youth the need for safe housing is at a premium. GLBT youth report experiencing discrimination, harassment and violence at shelters from other youth and sometimes even service providers. As a component of the program, the GreenHouse Project will provide culturally competent trainings for anyone who works with youth.

The name of the GreenHouse Project was chosen for two reasons:

First, our youth are the future of our community, needing to be cultivated with support for their growth.

Secondly, we do this to honor Maurice Green, a former participant of 1n10 whose violent and tragic murder we hope to never forget and never have repeated.
